NORTHLANDS BOWLING CLUB
BY – LAWS
(Amended July 2022)
- Playing days
1.1 Except on Public holidays and as otherwise provided in these by-laws,
play may take place as follows:
Mixed bowls
Mixed ladies and men’s bowls will be played on every Thursday afternoon
and every second and fourth Saturday afternoon.
Separate bowls
Men’s and ladies bowls will be played on Tuesday afternoons and every
first, third and fifth Saturday afternoon..
Competitions
(a) No Club competitions are permitted to be played on Thursday
afternoons, except in circumstances of necessity with agreement of
the Executive arranged by the Competition Secretaries.
(b) Posted competitions will have preference over tabs-in games on all
other days.
(c) Mixed bowls are permitted for sponsored tournaments on Tuesdays.
Other days
The Club will be closed on Good Friday; Christmas day and on New
Year’s Day.
Games may be arranged on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in
consultation with Greens Staff.
On public holidays tabs-in mixed bowls may take place in the mornings
and/or afternoons. 1.2 Practice Play
Legitimate practice play may take place at any time subject to the
following conditions: The allocation of greens for practice play is in
consultation with Greens Staff.
(a) No practice play shall take place before 16h00 whilst Club games are in
progress.
(b) No actual games may take place and no score cards or score boards may
be used.
(c) The wearing of bowling dress is optional but flat, heel-less, smooth-soled
shoes must be worn.
(d) No practice play shall take place on any green on which a tournament is
in progress.
(e) Members shall be responsible for ensuring that mats and jacks are
returned to the Clubhouse after use.

- Tabs-in:
2.1 Tabs-in play will commence at 09h00 for morning play and 13h45 for
afternoon play. Tabs must be handed to the selector on duty not less
than 15 minutes before scheduled starting times.
2.2 Tabs-in draws will be conducted by the selector/s on duty and the format
of play and team allocations will be at the discretion of the selector/s,
taking into account the gradings established by the selections committees;
but skips should be drawn where possible.
2.3 All tabs-in games will be played over a minimum of eighteen ends unless
interrupted by inclement weather..
- Bounce or Arranged Games:
No Bounce or arranged games can be played on Tabs-In days.
- Children: No person under the age of eighteen years, who is not a registered
bowler, shall be allowed on the Club premises unless accompanied by an adult
who shall be responsible for that person’s behavior.
- Dogs: Dogs shall not be allowed on Club premises.
- Dress:
6.1 In all Tabs In or matches on the club greens (except with permission of the
President) players shall wear the regulation bowling dress as defined.
6.2 Only smooth-soled, heel-less footwear (including sandals with ankle straps
for ladies) may be worn.
6.3 Windbreakers and cardigans or sweaters in club colours may be worn.
6.4 Men – Club shirt or white/cream shirt with collar and sleeves, long
white/cream pants or tailored white/cream shorts, white socks with
manufactures logo or ringed colours and regulation shoes. White or
Green hat/cap for league or inter-club matches.
6.5 Ladies – Club shirt or white/cream collar shirt, ¾ or long white/cream
pants, shorts, skirts and regulation shoes.
6.6 Mufti or Casual Wear dress shall be as follows:
6.7 Men – Any colour shirt with a sleeve (no vests), shorts, long pants,
regulation shoes (no bare feet).
Ladies – Any colour clothing, regulation shoes (no bare feet).
6.8 Exco members attending the Annual General Meeting will be required to
wear regulation bowling dress.
6.9 Officials at prize giving and recipients at this occasion will be required to
wear regulation bowling dress.

- Tea:
Arrangements for the provision of teas and refreshments shall be as prescribed
by the catering committee.
- Duty of Sponsors of Applicants for Membership:
The duty of the proposer and seconder of an applicant for membership is:
- Ensure that the application form is fully and correctly completed before
signing.
- If the applicant is not already known to them, introduce the applicant to as
many of the committee members as possible, but certainly including the
President or a Vice-President, the Secretary and the Treasurer.
- If the applicant is to become a bowler, introduce the applicant to a Club
coach. This is to be done before the date of the committee meeting at which the
application is to be considered. Once accepted as a member, the proposer and seconder shall ensure that the
applicant is familiar with relevant aspecgts of the Club’s activities.
- Bar Service:
The bar will be open during such times as may be laid down by the general
committee.
- Parking of Vehicles:
10.1 No person shall drive a vehicle or park in the area between A and C
Greens unless authorized to do so by the general committee.
10.2 Reserved parking shall be provided and shall be for the sole use of those
designated or those temporally deputizing.
10.3 Parking is not permitted on the upper level directly in front of the
clubhouse.
- Inter-Club and Similar Competitions:
The general committee shall decide in which events, whether National or
District, teams representing the Club shall be entered.
- Notification of Selection:
Members selected to represent the Club in National or District matches shall be
notified through the medium of the Club notice board.
- Duties of Members selected to represent the Club:
13.1 In any competitions in which teams are selected to represent the Club, it
shall be the duty of the reserve players to be readily available. If a
selected player including the reserve is not available, the Convener of
By-laws – Amended June 2015 Page 5 Selectors shall be advised as soon as possible so that a replacement can be arranged. 13.2 When a player selected to play fails to report for the match set down to be
played, the team manager and the skip concerned, or in the absence of
the skip, the third shall decide on the composition of the team. Should
players or reserves, except for any valid reason, fail to attend the games
for which they have been selected the selection committee shall have the
power to exclude them from further consideration.
13.3 The names of reserves shall be posted on the Club notice board in
alphabetical, and not in preferential order.
13.4 Members selected to represent the Club will be required to wear Club
Colours.
- Club Notices:
14.1 A member of the Executive shall approve all notices displayed on the
general notice board.
14.2 Only the Hon Secretary, Competition Secretaries shall have authority to
display/remove relevant notices.
- Club Competitions:
15.1 Dates of Competitions:
The competition secretaries shall present, in advance, a calendar
proposing the schedule for the Club competitions throughout the year.
They shall call for entries for to each competition not more than 21 days
before commencing each competition and shall indicate the first date on
which that competition will be played and the anticipated final for that
competition.
The competition secretaries shall attempt to encourage spectator interest
by holding a cluster of several competition finals on the same day and
advertising the event ahead of time.
15.2 Completion of Competitions
If any person, having entered a competition, is not available on the
scheduled date for his/her game, and cannot make himself/herself
available to play the game ahead of the scheduled date, the Skip or
highest graded player shall find a replacement, or a substitute, subject to
the approval of the Competition Secretary, and in accordance with the
standard procedures given below, failing which he/she, or the team, will be
scratched.
Any player who is unavailable to play in the competition final, may at the
discretion of the Competition Secretary be scratched.
The only exception allowed is if players are engaged in National,
Provincial or District matches or duties, in which case matches can be re-
arranged at the request of the players concerned.
By-laws – Amended June 2015 Page 6 15.3 Smoking is not permitted on the playing area at any time. Smoking is
permitted on the bank above the playing area.
15.4 All drawn club competitions must be graded into playing positions from the
entry of players and teams then drawn in the presence of at least two
selectors. 15.5 Replacements and Substitutes
15.5.1 Replacements
If a member who has entered a competition withdraws from the
competition before the first game that is scheduled for his/her team, a
replacement approved by the Competition Secretaries shall be allowed to
complete the team. Such replacements shall remain members of that
team for the remaining duration of the competition and the replaced player
shall not re-join the team at any later stage.
15.5.2 Substitutes.
If a member who has entered a competition is not available to play in the
first or any subsequent game or who, after being posted for a competition
fails to appear within ten (15) minutes of the scheduled time for the start of
the match, a substitute approved by the Competition Secretary shall be
allowed to complete the team. Such substitutes, drawn from the bank,
shall be temporary members of the team for the duration of the match for
which the original player was unavailable. All the above subject to and at
the sole discretion of the Competition Secretary.
15.6 Time of Play
Matches in Club competitions shall be at normal tabs-in times, unless
otherwise arranged by mutual consent. A team or individual who has not
reported to the organizing official within fifteen (15) minutes of the starting
time shall be scratched.
15.7 Entrance Fees
The General Committee shall determine entrance fees for Club
championships and competitions.
15.8 Prizes
In addition to any cup or trophy that may be won, the winners and runners-
up in each competition may receive such prizes as the General Committee
decides.
15.9 Definition of Novice
A novice for the purpose of Club competitions is a member who, on the
closing date for the acceptance of entries for a competition, has played
By-laws – Amended June 2015 Page 7 bowls for less than three years and has not up to that date won a singles competition. If any doubt exists as to the qualification of a member, the matter shall be referred to the General Committee whose decision shall be final. 15.10 Prior Claim To Greens
Posted Club competitions shall have first claim to use the greens, provided
that, if required, one-third of the available rinks shall remain available for
tabs-in games.
Use of rinks for sponsored or open tournaments shall be solely at the
discretion of the General Committee.
15.11 Dual Members
A Member who is also a member of any other club under the jurisdiction
of Port Natal Bowls, and chooses that other club as his/her first call club
shall not be eligible to play in the Northlands Club men’s and ladies
singles championship competition.
- Club Tournament Rules for Northlands
In a club tournament arranged from Tabs In draw the following guidelines will
apply: A) If the number of Tabs results in the situation where a mixture of Fours and
Trips games have to be played, the TRIPS must play with three bowls each.
B) If the number of TABS results in the situation where a mixture of Fours and
Trips has to be played, the fours will play 20 ends and the trips will play 18
ends.
C) If the number of Tabs results in a broken rink the Lead and Third of this Team
will bowl three bowls each. The third of the fours team will stay at the bowling
end. As this is a drawn competition no penalty shots will be deducted from
the score.
D) In all Drawn Tabs tournaments the teams must be balanced and the skips
drawn at the discretion of the selector/s on duty. TIED RESULTS If, at the conclusion of any competition in which points are awarded for a win or a
draw, two or more teams are at the top of the list with equal points the winning
team will be the team with the highest “NET SCORE”. Should equality still exist
the team with the least score against will be the winner.
